Adirondack Health: Dealing with a Data Breach

Jun 14, 2021DeborahBlog

As technology progresses and more of our information lives in the digital space, cyberattacks, such as data breaches, are becoming more sophisticated, too. No industries are immune.

Here is a look at the recent data breach attack on Adirondack Health and how medical practices can benefit from the enhanced security features of our HIPAA Compliant Cloud Solutions.

What is a Data Breach?

The term data breach refers to the action of a cybercriminal successfully breaking into a data source and extracting sensitive information. There are many types of data breaches and they can be as simple as an employee downloading files onto a flash drive and accidentally coming in contact with a malicious file. They can also be a physical action, such as a cybercriminal breaking into a computer or network. In addition, it can also be done remotely by bypassing network security. The most common method used to target companies is remote attacks.

The overall purpose of these attacks is to gain information for identity theft or fraud. Cyber thieves often target sensitive customer data such as passwords, Social Security numbers, and banking information.

Data Breach on Adirondack Health

Adirondack Health recently announced that a data breach recently exposed the information of 800 patients.

Sensitive patient information was threatened when CaptureRX, a third-party vendor who works closely with Adirondack Health, experienced a data breach due to a ransomware attack. The attack was brought to their attention when they noticed that the personal information of Adirondack Heath patients was among files that could be accessed without authorization.

Adirondack Health is no longer partnering with CaptureRX as a third-party vendor. However, they are working together to notify patients and to remind them to remain diligent when checking their accounts for suspicious activity and errors.
